Bitcoin Allocation for RIAs and Financial Advisers

Clients are asking. Most advisers do not want to build the vehicle analysis, custody comparison, sizing framework, and compliance documentation from scratch for a single sleeve of a portfolio. This is the work the firm does, alongside the adviser rather than around them.

The adviser keeps the relationship. The allocation gets governed.

A Bitcoin allocation is a portfolio architecture decision, not a product decision. The questions that matter are how much, in what form, through which vehicles, held where, and under what documented process for changing the position over time. Those questions have answers. Working through them rigorously is the difference between a speculative position an adviser has to defend and a governed allocation that survives a full market cycle, a compliance review, and a generational transfer.

Seven questions advisers ask before allocating

What is the appropriate position size for a client portfolio?

Sizing begins with total investable assets, existing alternative exposures, liquidity requirements, and the client's time horizon. There is no standard percentage that applies to every household. The sizing analysis is part of the engagement, and it is documented so the adviser can defend it later.

Which vehicle belongs in a client account?

Exposure can be constructed through spot Bitcoin ETFs, Bitcoin treasury equities, buffer-style instruments designed to limit downside participation, or direct institutional custody. Vehicle selection depends on the account type, the custodial platform, the client's tax situation, and the adviser's own policy constraints.

How does the position get held and billed?

Assets stay at qualified custodians. Direct positions are held under institutional multi-signature custody so no single party can move funds unilaterally. Advisers who need the position to appear on their existing custodial statements generally use public markets vehicles; advisers whose clients want to hold the asset itself use the direct custody route.

What do I document for compliance?

A governance framework: the written decision-making process that defines when the position is added to, reduced, or exited, who approves each action, and what evidence supports the original sizing. That document is what turns a speculative position into a governed allocation in an examination file.

What happens in a 40 percent drawdown?

That answer is written in advance by the governance framework, not decided in the moment. Advisers who arrive at a drawdown without a documented process tend to exit at the worst point. Client education is part of the same work: a client who understands what they own does not need to make a decision under pressure.

Why Bitcoin only, and not the broader digital asset category?

Bitcoin is the only digital asset with a fixed supply, an institutional custody market, and regulatory classification as a digital commodity. The rest of the category is a separate conversation this firm does not have.

How do advisers work with the firm?

Some advisers refer a client relationship, some engage the firm as a sub-adviser on the Bitcoin sleeve, and some use the firm only for the portfolio architecture and governance work and then implement themselves. Which arrangement fits depends on the adviser's registration, custodial platform, and client agreements. That is what the first conversation determines.
